Almada
Almada is a city with its own strong identity, positioned on the south bank of the Tagus River directly across from Lisbon. While often viewed as a suburb of the capital, Almada has centuries of history and a local culture rooted in the sea, the river, and its working-class past.
The city is a fascinating study in vertical layers. The old core, Almada Velha, sits atop the cliff face, featuring steep, winding streets and terraces that provide what are arguably the most memorable views of Lisbon, the river, and the 25 de Abril Bridge. At the base, the neighborhood of Cacilhas retains its authentic character with old-school, fish restaurants and the ferry terminal, maintaining a constant, steady rhythm of river traffic.
Beyond the urban center, the municipality stretches to the Atlantic, where the extensive, sandy beaches of Costa da Caparica offer a different kind of life - a place for surfing, fishing, and seaside relaxation. Almada is perhaps best known for the towering Cristo Rei statue, a monumental landmark that watches over the river mouth. Visitors find Almada a down-to-earth atmosphere, easy access to both city bustle and ocean waves, and a grounded sense of place distinct from its famous neighbor.
