Cabanas de Tavira
Cabanas de Tavira is a former fishing village nestled along the banks of the Ria Formosa Natural Park in the Eastern Algarve. Unlike the open-ocean beaches of the west, Cabanas is defined by the shallow, sheltered lagoon and the barrier islands that protect it from the Atlantic.
The village's identity is intrinsically linked to the sea and the salt marsh. Its name, "Huts of Tavira", recalls its humble origins as a temporary settlement for tuna fishermen who would beach their boats and set up simple shelters during the season. Though now a welcoming residential and holiday spot, the community still honors its maritime roots.
The most unique feature is its access to the coast. Instead of stepping directly onto the ocean beach, you take a short, peaceful boat ride across the calm waters of the Ria to reach the long, pristine stretch of sand known as Praia de Cabanas. This barrier island beach is essentially deserted, offering miles of quiet, unspoiled shoreline. Back in the village, the waterfront promenade-lined with cafés and restaurants specializing in fresh seafood, especially oysters and clams harvested from the lagoon-is the center of its relaxed, sun-drenched atmosphere.
