Cabra
Cabra is a historic town in the geographic heart of Andalucía, serving as a principal entry point to the rugged beauty of the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. Its name, possibly derives from the Greek Aigagros (mountain goat), points to its ancient origins and its close relationship with the surrounding limestone peaks.
The town possesses an immense historical depth, evident in the layers of its architecture. Once the Roman Licabrum and the Visigothic episcoal seat of Egabro, its most notable structure is the Parish Church of La Asunción y Ángeles. Built on the foundations of a former mosque, its Baroque interior is surprisingly supported by numerous red marble columns, giving it the nickname of the "Baroque mosque".
Cabra is a place of profound civic beauty. You can explore the old quarters of La Villa and El Cerro, known for their narrow, whitewashed streets, often adorned with overflowing pots of flowers. Just outside the center, the natural spring of the Fuente del Río offers a serene, leafy oasis. The town's atmosphere is a balanced blend of old-world grace, Baroque artistry, and the quiet, enduring traditions of the Andalucía interior, sustained by the surrounding olive groves and the clear air of the mountains.
