Carmona
Carmona is an ancient, commanding city positioned atop a gentle rise overlooking the fertile plains of the Vega del Corbones in Seville. Its identity is one of enduring, visible history, having been continuously settled for millennia, earning it the name "star of Andalucía".
The history of Carmona spans from Tartessian settlement to Roman Carmo and pivotal Moorish period. This layered past is evident in the remarkable sights that bookend the city. At its western entrance stands the imposing Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla, a fortified gateway that provides entry into the old town. At the opposing, eastern end is the ruined Alcázar del Rey Don Pedro, a monumental Moorish fortress offering commanding views of the plains below.
Inside the old walls, the city unfolds into narrow streets, Renaissance palaces, and serene squares. A truly significant site is the vast Roman Necropolis, one of the best-preserved burial sites in Spain, which includes hundreds of family tombs and an ancient Roman amphitheater. Carmona's deep sense of place is one of stately tradition and historical density, presenting a powerful cross-section of Andalucía and Iberian history.
