Carrión de los Céspedes

Carrión de los Céspedes is a municipality in the Aljarafe comarca of Seville, positioned near the border with Huelva. Its identity is closely tied to the agricultural productivity of the surrounding flatlands, primarily covered in olive groves and cereal fields.

The settlement's history traces back to an ancient Arab farmhouse (alquería). After the Christian conquest, its ownership changed hands, eventually being sold ti the noble Céspedes family in the 16th century, whose name it subsequently adopted. This lineage contributes a layer of historical significance to the town's otherwise rural setting.

The main public areas of the town are the Plaza de la Constitución, which serves as the central gathering spot for social life and celebrations, and the important religious sites: the 15th-century Iglesia de San Martín and the Ermita de NUestra Señora de la Consolación. Carrión is also particularly known for the traditional craft of producing intricate Manila Shawls.

The community deeply cherishes its traditions, holding a profound connection to the annual Rocío Pilgrimage, with its confraternity being one of the oldest to make the journey. The town provides a glimpse into the grounded, historic, and community-focused existence of the Sevillian countryside.
