Castillo de la Guardas

El Castillo de las Guardas is a municipality located in the mountainous northwest corner of Seville province, nestled in the lower slopes of the Sierra Morena. The town's setting is one of rugged, extensive rural lands, primarily consisting of dehesas (Mediterranean oak forests) historically used for raising fighting bulls and Iberian pigs.

Its name, "The Castle of the Guards", suggests a military past, and remnants of its medieval wall or fortification remain, though its origins are somewhat unclear (possibly Muslim or Christian). The town's historical center is marked by the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, a religious building that blends Mudéjar and advanced Renaissance architectural styles.

However, the location is most widely known today for its Nature Reserve, which is situated on the grounds of a former Roman and later modern mining operation. This large park allows visitors to observe over 1000 animals from more than 100 species, living in semi-freedom across a massive, naturalized area. This reserve has made El Castillo de las Guardas a significant regional destination for family tourism and wildlife viewing. The local existence is a peaceful blend of centuries-old rural tradition and modern ecological focus.
