Écija
Écija is a deeply historical city located in the eastern part of the Seville province, settled on the fertile banks of the Genil River. Its identity is famously linked to its exceptionally high temperatures, earning it the traditional nickname, "The Frying Pan od Andalucía".
The city possesses a monumental architectural wealth, reflecting its long history that spans Roman, Visigothic, and Moorish periods. Under the Romans, it was known as Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi, a major center whose administrative importance is still evidenced by archaeological finds.
However, Écija is most celebrated for its preserved Baroque heritage. The city's skyline is graced by a multitude of magnificent, ornate church bell towers and steeples, earning it the description of the "City of Towers". These towers, richly decorated with colorful tiles (azulejos) and carved stone, testify to the wealth of the local aristocracy and religious orders during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The local economy is predominantly driven by agriculture, especially the cultivation of olives, cotton, and cereals in the surrounding plains. Écija offers a compelling experience of a grand, architecturally conserved inland Andalucía city, defined by its Baroque splendor and its ties to the region's ancient agricultural heartland.
