El Puerto de Santa María

El Puerto de Santa María is a historic port city located on the Bay of Cádiz, where the Guadalete River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its existence has been shaped entirely by maritime trade, sherry production, and its historical role in the exploration and commerce with Americas.

The city's immense reputation rests on its status as one of the three points of the Sherry Triangle, alongside Jerez de la Frontera and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Huge, cathedral-like bodegas dominate parts of the city, where the specialized biological aging process (crianza) creates celebrated Fino, Oloroso, and Amontillado wines.

El Puerto was the location from which Christopher Columbus's mapmaker, Juan de la Cosa, drew the first map of the Americas in 1500, cementing its early importance in Spanish naval history. Architectural landmarks include the stricking Castillo de San Marcos, a fortified church built over a former mosque.

The city also possesses beautiful beaches, such as Playa de Valdelagrana. Local life is strongly tied to fresh seafood, and the city's Ribeira del Marisco (Seafood Bank) is one of Andalucía most celebrated places to eat shellfish. El Puerto presents a powerful blend of wine industry tradition,, naval history and casual coastal enjoyment.
