Olhão
Olhão is a Portuguese city and municipality widely recognized as the most important commercial fishing port in the Algarve region. This location sits on the coastline, facing the protected lagoon system of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The city's rapid growth in the 17th century was directly related to the flourishing fishing trade, a historical foundation that persists today through its large canning industry. Olhão is noted for its unique "Cubist" architecture , specifically the flat-roofed houses inspired by North African design. The central waterfront area, marked by its large red-brick market structures, functions as a key commercial center and gateway to the barrier islands.
