Tavira

Tavira is a Portuguese city and municipality located in the Eastern Algarve, situated on both margins of the Gilão River. The river flows through the city before the Atlantic via the protected Ria Formosa lagoon system. The location is characterized by its historical architecture, including numerous churches and distinctive four sloped roofs. The commanding ruins of the Moorish castle stand on the highest point of the city, making its strategic importance. Tavira functions as a key administrative and cultural center and a popular tourism destination, offering access to the sand bar islands of the Ria Formosa via ferry routes. The medieval bridge that connects the two sections of the city is a central structure.
